Car Wash Knowledge and the California Drought

Few people realize that washing our cars in our driveways is one of the most environmentally un-friendly chores we can do around the house unlike household waste water that enters sewers or septic systems and undergoes treatment before it is discharged into the environment, what runs off from your car goes right into storm drains and eventually into rivers, streams, creeks and wetlands where it poisons aquatic life and wreaks other ecosystem havoc.

After all, that water is loaded with a witch's brew of gasoline, oil and residues from exhaust fumes as well as the harsh detergents being used for the washing itself.

Commercial Car Washes Treat Waste Water

On the other hand, federal laws in both the U.S. and Canada require commercial car wash facilities to drain their waste water into sewer systems, so it gets treated before it is discharged back into the great outdoors. And commercial car washes use computer controlled system and high-pressure nozzles and pumps that minimize water usage. Many also recycle and re-use the rinse water.

The International Car Wash Association an industry group representing commercial car wash companies, reports that automatic car washes use less than half the water of even the most careful home car washer. According to one report, washing a car at home typically uses between 80 and 140 gallons of water, while a commercial car wash averages less than 45 gallons per car.

5 Things to know about California Drought:

  • It's one of the worst in California's history
  • Storage levels are dropping , preserve our reserves
  • Conservation is key in hot summer and fall
  • Limiting outdoor water use equals big saving

Our role in the Drought: Conservation

Outdoors,

  • Replace your thirsty lawn with California plants that uses much less water.
  • Repair sprinkler leaks, reset sprinkler timer to reduce  watering.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean drive ways and sidewalks.
  • In removing rust-causing salt from your car, use a professional car wash. Automatic and self-serve car-washing uses less water than the home wash that may result in wasted water, needlessly running hoses and tipping buckets.

Indoors,

  • Make the switch to high efficiency toilets. They can save the average family up to 40000 gallons every year.
  • Wash only full loads of dishes and laundry.
  • Take shorter showers.

By taking your vehicle to one of many professional car wash facilities and adjusting some of our usual habits, you are helping to preserve water and one of our country's most valuable assets- the environment.

" Don't waste another minute wasting water"

What is Detailing? How does it differ from Car Washing?

Professional Detailing is the service of rejuvenating the painted and upholstery surfaces of your car to restore their cosmetic new car beauty. In contrast...car washing is only cleaning  your car by removing dirt.

When your car has been exposed to nature's elements and the abuses of daily travel, the paint becomes oxidized and dull. Our climate can be especially hard on your cars finish. Sun and salty air are destructive to paint. Professional waxing helps to protect your paint and keeps it shining longer. Detailing your car removes the dull haze, road tar , tree sap, water spots, bug splatter, bird droppings, as well as oxidation that simple washing will not. This is accomplished by using a professional orbital polisher to polish the finish. As a result, it polishes the surface without leaving swirl marks on the paint. After this rejuvenation of the exterior, your car will look almost new. Thus, detailing makes car washing more effective... your car will shine every time you wash it. Tires are treated with protectant  to restore their gloss and retard deterioration. Interior detailing adds to your enjoyment by providing a fresh car look and smell inside. Upholstery, carpet and mats are shampooed, the leather is cleaned  and nourished, and the vinyl  is treated with a protectant.

Information taken from carcare.org

April is National Car Care Month.

The non-profit car Care Council Recommends that motorist follow three simple steps during National Car Care Month in April.

  • Keep your vehicle clean. Regular car washes and waxes protect the paint and body of your car from corrosive debris. In parts of the country where salt is used on the roads, regularly  washing is especially important.
  • Keep your car on schedule. Every  vehicle has a manufacturer recommended  maintenance schedule. Whether you choose to do your own maintenance or patronize a local repair shop, following a routine  service schedule is essential  to keeping  your car  in safe and dependable  working order.
  • Keep an eye  on the little  things. Your windshield  wipers aren't cleaning  as well as they should? your gas tank is missing  its cap? There's a warning light  on your dashboard? When you see your  car needs attention, don't delay. Repairing  small things can help avoid more costly  problems down the road , and add years of useful vehicle life.

Most paints currently used by all auto manufactures are at their maximum gloss the day they are painted. Acrylic and clear coat paints begin to lose their shine as you drive away from the dealership. Detailing restores the sparkle and shine so that your vehicle can look brand new.Any car that is over a year old will look significantly better after detailing. Even a car less than a year old will shine brighter and retain that shine longer, when it's been detailed. The average price of a new car today is over $18000. You can enhance the joy of ownership and retain the value of your car by detailing it semi-annually.Car dealers routinely detail their cars so that they will bring more money on the lot, If you are going to sell your car, you can get top dollar by having it detailed. Buy why wait until then? Enjoy the benefits of a clean and shiny car during your ownership. In general, your car, van or truck should be detailed every 6 months. This prevents the surface from deteriorating. Vehicles  that are used commercially or are left outside during the day may require more frequent service.
